Mobile Communications - Samsung Expects 16% Growth in Handset Sales for 2005

South Korean mobile phone vendor, Samsung Electronics, has announced plans to build more production lines for mobile handsets in 2005. In addition to Korean production expansions, lines in China are expected to add 30 million units in annual capacity. 2005 sales are projected to climb 16% to 100 million units, up from the expected 86 million units in 2004.

 

In addition, it will be investing 100 billion won (US$94.3 million; 1US$= 1,060 won) to develop technologies for 3.5G wireless broadband services. Samsung claims that it has arrangements to eat aggressively into the 3G market as well. In 2005, it will be supplying WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) handsets to as many as 15 global carriers.
